Black’s answer is logical. He brings an extra piece to his king’s defence and opens the diagonal for his b7-bishop and the c-file for his Rc8.

In case of 13...Nxc3?! 14.bxc3 Ba3 15.Rb1, the Rb1 may join the attacking forces on the kingside with a rook lift along the 5th rank: Rb5-h5, which is a known attacking motif seen sometimes in the Petroff Defence.

14.Nxd5

In general, White would certainly prefer to delay this capture, but the problem is that Black’s Nd5 in connection with his strong Bb7 may make a dangerous attacking duo, e.g. 14.Rh4? Ng6 15.Rh3 Ndf4! 16.Bxf4 Nxf4 17.Bxh7+ Qh8 and Black wins after 18.Rh4 Bxf3 19.Qf3 Qxh4.
